Clarity
Paintings and Assemblages

June 18 - July 11, 2008

"...For this couple, art is still as firmly wedded to human spirituality as it was for our tribal ancestors. It does not exist in some independent aesthetic realm, but is connected to who we are and what we are, both as individuals and also as people.
This year’s Clarity exhibition features colorful figurative paintings and shadow-box like assemblages that use children’s toys.     If prolific Howard Finster (1916-2001) had his paradise Gardens in Georgia, the Hakes have their house on Park Street, the contents of which are as astonishing as anything Finster created.  It is filled with Children's toys, hundreds upon hundreds of little figures among them, examples of which are to be seen in their assemblages in this show.
The artists see the use of toys as a way of reconnecting oneself to earlier times – a time of imagination, openness, and authenticity. It is a deliberate search for childlike simplicity, which should not be mistaken for childishness. For them it is a life principle.
The result is a collection of colorful and joyful paintings and assemblages, slightly eccentric in the sense that they seem at odds with the grimness of daily life, but aimed good and true at the undefeated innocent nature that remains in any of those fortunate enough not to have lost it.
”Salvador Dali meets Romper Room” could describe the work and the show presents work coming the lighter side of their artistic process.
The Hakes are also writers of poetry and prose, host a monthly art salon, teach art at their studio at Lincoln Street Center, and have a radio show on creativity on WRFR (93.3 Rockland/ 99.3 Camden) every Monday at 9am. The gallery show runs through July 11.

Jackson Gregory
Fine Art Decorative Screens and Paintings

 May 23 - June 13, 2008

"Jackson Gregory's graphically striking colorful geometric patters are meticulously painted on wooden screens and canvas.  The artist uses an intimate knowledge of optics and the effects of color to create powerful images that almost have the quality of 3-dimensional illusions.  Several of his triptychs give the impression of being able to stare through certain parts of the flat painted surface into a separate world that seem to exist beyond and behind.
Gregory is an award-winning painter and former instructor of drawing and graphic arts at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.  He has had shows at the MFA and DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, Mass., and his work has been acquired by numerous corporate collections.
