Denise Aumick Artist Biography

As far back as Denise can remember fabrics, threads, needles and a sewing machine were necessary elements in her life. They were always present, finding homes in already over-stuffed spaces, on tables, in corners of rooms & closets. She feels she had no choice but to sew. The desire to express her inner creativity found an outlet in the sewing arts, an acceptable means of artistic expression in her family home.

Being a child of the 60’s & 70’s Denise began adding beading & embroidery to clothing and accessories, creating funky altered apparel that found homes with many of her friends. She also stitched together different fabrics, embellished them with various threads, and stuck them up on walls - the first of her collages. Sometime in the 1980’s Denise began quilting. She made bed covers, hand quilting every stitch, and trying every pattern & technique until her skills evolved into the art pieces she produces today.

Inspiration can come from many different sources. Fellow artists who always lend support will often spark ideas that can become an art piece. Hiking is a passion and nature serves as a perpetual muse. Living in the beautiful Shawangunk Ridge area at the foot of the Catskills, Denise finds artistic motivation ever present in her daily life. She often finds inspiration in found objects, be they vintage, new or ordinary. A discovery at a yard sale or flea market will often lead to a frenzy of creative activity in which the treasured find plays an integral part in a new collage. Denise finds the support and enthusiasm of her daughter and husband an especially important aspect in her creativity. She thanks them profusely (and promises dinner will be ready real soon).

Appealing to people of all ages and professions, quilting is a centuries old American art form that is soothing to the eyes while satisfying to the soul and seems to strike chords deep within the viewer. Denise uses traditional sewing skills combined with modern construction techniques to produce works that are the heirlooms of tomorrow. Described as ‘elegantly organic’ and ‘different from anything else’, exhibited in galleries and honored with awards Denise’s work is executed with exemplary care and attention to detail. She believes she represents her art work and her art work represents her.
