Originally
a native of Cushing, Maine, Mike Farley moved to Boston and
eventually found his calling in the world of art. He
graduated with honors from New England School of Art and Design in 2008.
While there he became inspired by the work of Boston artist
and teacher Randall Thurston.
Farley eventually began cutting out his
drawings and paintings. He refers to his work as
"organic" in that the figures are natural
creatures
and plants born from his responses and interest in the biology of
plants, animals, and insects. Further influenced by the sea
animals at the Boston Aquarium, his experiences growing up on the
coast of Maine, and his interest in the animals and fauna of the
Amazon, all his creatures have Latin genus species
nomenclature. Farley begins by drawing and planning out
each hybrid creature and plant although "it can change at any time."
He describes some of his creatures as being entirely from his
imagination and others more easily recognizable as "partly of our
world".
In 2008 Farley's intricately cut paintings were chosen to
be in a show representing the work of one notable graduate from
each
art school in the Boston area
("... It's expertly made..."
Boston Globe
7/30/2008).
Farley's photography focuses on nature and the "nature" of city life
-- the colors and geometric shapes that are produced naturally in
the city, as well as the the animals and trees in city parks.
In 2009
he was selected to participate in “Artist in the Arboretum”at the
Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University.
He also stages his own impromptu art in parks using seed pods and
other natural products of the Summer's growth.
